A clean-looking sample is a starting point, not a cup-quality guarantee. The SCA separates physical assessment—colour, defects, moisture and size—from sensory assessment. Screen analysis describes bean-size distribution; defect assessment describes physical faults. They answer different questions and should accompany a representative sample and cupping.
A practical sample checklist
- Identify the lot, crop and process; record the sample date and weight.
- Inspect colour, uneven appearance and foreign material under consistent lighting; record unusual odours.
- Request a screen distribution and the allowed undersize proportion, not only one screen number.
- Record defect types and counts using the agreed grading method and sample weight; do not compare unlike systems.
- Measure moisture and assess the roasted sample by cupping; appearance alone cannot establish flavour.
- Match the accepted sample and measurable tolerances to the written offer.
Atlas buyer interpretation
For Oman, UAE and Iran buyers, compare offers on the same testing basis. A larger bean is not automatically a better purchase. Send your sourcing requirements through the website contact section; the form prepares a WhatsApp message that you review and send.
